Dr. Volker Nolte is a world-renowned rowing coach, biomechanics researcher, author, and equipment innovator. A former international rower for Germany, he is best known for his pioneering academic research into stroke efficiency, his championship-winning coaching career at Western University, and his authored texts on rowing technique.
Competitive Athlete: Represented Germany internationally, earning a bronze medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships (1970) and competing across multiple World Championship regattas. He remains an active Masters competitor.
Western University (1993–2017): Served as Assistant Professor of Biomechanics and Head Coach of the Western Mustangs rowing program. Under his tenure, the Mustangs won 14 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) titles and 6 Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURCs) with the men's team, along with 5 OUA titles and 4 CURCs with the women's program.
Henley Royal Regatta: Guided the Western men's eight to victory in the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 2008.
National & Olympic Coaching: Served as Rowing Canada’s Lightweight Men's National Team Coach (1992–2000), coaching crews to an Olympic Silver Medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games and World Championship titles in 1993 and 2000. He later assisted the Canadian Women’s National Team leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Biomechanics & Equipment: Holds patents for isokinetic training machinery and has conducted extensive research on rigging, measurement tools, dynamic movement, and boat design (including historic work around sliding-rigger setups).
Literary Contributions: Author and editor of seminal rowing texts, including Rowing Faster (2004 / 2nd ed. 2011), Rowing Science, and Masters Rowing (co-authored with Wolfgang Fritsch).
